The Manoa Valley in Hawaii was the location of the first well documented coffee growing venture in the Hawaiian Islands. In 1825 an English Agriculturist named John Wilkinson arrived on the HMS Blonde with coffee plants from Brazil.
The plants were cultivated at the estate of Kamauleule, the Governor of the island under King Kamehameha II,
Unfortunately Wilkinson passed away in 1827, and the plants in Manoa didn't do well, but their cuttings were cultivated in other parts of the Island and in 1828 some of those cuttings were planted in the Kona district of the big island, which became the most successful attempt at growing coffee in Hawaii and became Kanaka Koppe- the coffee now still commertially grown in the Kona region.
